Creative energy is in the air!

Happy May! I just came back home from my annual creative retreat, Empty Spools Seminars in Asilomar, near Pacific Grove, California. Five days of taking 'Composition Quartet' from Sue Benner made me feel so happy and accomplished. It also was a wonderful time to breath creative air with like-minded people.

Before I left for this retreat, I finished teaching my Claire Lilienthal school students and installed their work at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center. The exhibit is from April 29th to June 2nd. Please come and visit to see what my students created during 9 weeks of class. I am so proud of them!

It was an honor to be featured in theReverberate Podcast episode #9! Adrienne and Kristine of A Verb for Keeping Warm interviewed me and I had a great time talking about bojagi and myself as an artist. If you want to know a little more about either bojagi or me, please listen to this podcast! And if you enjoy the podcast, please check other episodes, too!

Next week, I will go down to SoCal to attend Irvine Korean Festival and make wind chimes with visitors. Please come and make your own!

Spring is in the air!

March was another wet month and my backyard is happy with lots of green, pink, purple, and orange!

This month I will keep teaching bojagi classes at the Claire Lilienthal school for a few more weeks, then we will show all the works that we made during the class. Oakland Asian Cultural Center has the Asian Pacific American Heritage Festival in May. We will show our students’ bojagi work at their showcase. The event is from April 27th until June 2nd.

Basic Bojagi Class session I is in full swing now and we are having fun on Sundays! Basic Bojagi Class session II will be on Saturdays during May, June, and July. I will take the first 6 people who sign up. Current participants have priority to sign up. If you are interested in taking the class, click here and let me know. This class fills up fast!

Korea textile Tour 2019 is full now but you can sign up for the waitlist and future announcements.

Brenda Paik Sunoo came to Oakland last week for her book talk and I had a great time attending this very special evening of conversation, dance and good food. I even won a raffle so came back home with Innovatus wine from Napa!

Waiting for Spring

I can't believe how much rain we got last month! I love seeing all the green around me, and watching the seasons change!
I am happy to announce that I am a recipient of the Alliance for California Traditional Arts' (ACTA's) Apprenticeship Program 2019. I will work with Steph Rue and we will do an in-depth study of bojagi. Steph is a book artist and a papermaker. She makes Hanji and share her knowledge with people by teaching and lectures. We were connected through bojagi, and excited to study bojagi together this year. As we study bojagi, we plan to have an exhibition or public demonstration at the end of this year. I will update more details once we start our study. Stay Tuned!

Jeju Island Grannies of the Sea

Brenda Paik Sunoo with Youngsook Han
I picked up this book from my coffee table, dusted it off, and started to read again. I met Brenda Paik Sunoo in 2014 when I attended Korea Bojagi Forum in Jeju. We spent a very short time together during the conference but I could feel her love for Jeju Island. Haenyeo, the free divers of Jeju Island, harvest seaweed and shellfish in the sea. Here is a link that you can take a peek. Hope you can enjoy learning something new about Korea and Korean culture.
