Youngmin's September Newsletter Good bye summer, welcome autumn!

DAWN, my new work became a collection of the Mingei Museum.

In August, I resumed my morning walk around my neighborhood. I used to pass by and exchange greetings with my neighbors and their dogs. I wonder if they noticed my long absence while I was super busy. Day by day, I slowly realized how much I enjoyed my daily routine, and my morning walk became a time to find calmness. This morning, as I felt the crisp air, I realized it was time to say goodbye to summer and prepare for the cooler season.

Throughout my book project, I was surrounded by angels. There were the angels who encouraged me to write a book, the angel who checked my manuscript from the beginning (AKA my daughter), and another angel who was willing to review my manuscript even though she deserved a relaxing retirement after her long editing career.  There were also the group of angels who work for Herbert Press and the two sweet angels who didn’t hesitate to cut and prepare 300+ bojagi for me when I ran out of the initial 180. I am so grateful to be surrounded by angels.  I love all my angels! Thank you!

Last night, I finished signing, wrapping, and shipping my pre-ordered books-except for those who ordered internationally. Some of you have responded, but I'm still waiting for a few of you to confirm the additional shipping cost.

I am deeply grateful not only to my angels who helped me during the book project but also to those of you who pre-ordered my book since the beginning of this year. To express my gratitude, I made wrapping bojagi and wrapped each signed copy. Many of you sent me an email saying that the bojagi-wrapped book made you so happy! Thanks for sending happiness back to me!

I've run out of stock of my books, so I can't take any more orders at the moment. If you haven't gotten a copy yet, please check Bloomsbury or Amazon to order one. The official release date is September 17th, 2024. If you order from Amazon, please consider rating my book or writing a review. If you do write a review, send me your mailing address. I will send you a wrapping bojagi to you as a thank-you gift.

I am happy to announce that my new work, "Dawn" is featured in the "Blue Gold: The Art and Science of Indigo" exhibit (September 13, 2024-March 16, 2025) at the Mingei Museum in San Diego. For this piece, I dyed various types of hanji bidan (silk and hanji blend fabric) with indigo and constructed the work from these materials. I will be attending the opening reception on September 13th. If you are in this area, please come by and learn about the fascinating world of indigo.

On Friday, September 27th, I will be teaching the 'Plum Blossom Pincushion' class with Tatter. This is one of the projects featured in my book, and I am thrilled to offer this class. I hope you join me!
Another exciting offering from Tatter is World Embroidery Series III. Do you remember my dear friend, Heehwa Jo, the Korean embroidery artist? She is part of this series, along with two other artist friends of mine. If you sign up for this series, we might even see each other in the virtual classroom!

My preparations for the Korea Textile Tour in October 2024 are in full swing, and I can't wait to embark on this adventure with like-minded people. I have a long list of interested individuals for future tours, so If you'd like to join me, please let me know. I'll be announcing the 2025 tour date and registration details in the December newsletter.

After my Korea Textile Tour, I'll be participating in the QFIK (Quilt Festival in Korea) and curating an exhibit titled "Homage to Bojagi" in Seoul. I'm honored to showcase the wonderful works of Adam Pogue, Caitlin Parker, Miran Lee, Maryse Allard, and Sara Cook in this exhibit. I'll also be displaying a few of my own pieces. I'll keep you posted with photos and short videos!

Wishing you a wonderful September!
