'자투리보, Jaturibo' Indigo-dyed remnants turned into this jogakbo.

Summer traveling and bojagi

July was a less busy month and I had some downtime to restore my creative energy.
I was able to make this 자투리보, Jaturibo, Jogakbo made from remnants of indigo-dyed ramie from my recent trip to Japan. Some of you might remember that I visited Buaisou studio in Tokushima in late April.

I took a creative treat for myself by taking the 2-day Kakishibu workshop with Awonoyoh in mid-July.
Takayuki and Tomo Ishii shared their expertise and knowledge about the persimmon dye method (Kakishibu in Japanese, Gammul [감물] in Korean). As another bonus on this trip, I was able to meet Kathy Hatori of Botanical Colors. I've been watching their 'Feedback Friday' presentations during the pandemic and finally got to thank her in person for making such a wonderful program.
I also had a heartwarming reunion with my past Korea Textile Tour companions and one Slow Stitching retreat 2022 participant. Small world after all!
After I came back home from Seattle, I took my two dyed cotton pieces out in the sun to develop the colors, and they became rich dark brown and greyish purple. Sunbathing helps the color to settle!

Now I am packing again and heading east soon. It will be my second time spending a magical creative week in Maine with 40 creative souls at the Slow Stitching Retreat organized by Samantha Hoyt's A Gathering of Stitches. After I come back from that, I will pack again and head for Saint Louis, MO to lead the 'Community Bojagi project' with Gateway Korea Foundation and Saint Louis Art Museum. If you are in this area, please come and meet me and participate in this project. You can come to the museum on Sundays (8/13, 8/20, 9/3, 9/10) and I will be there on 8/13 and 9/3. The finished bojagi will be unveiled on 9/24!
The Pacific Northwest Quilts & Fiber Museum in La Conner, WA just opened the exhibit, 'Bojagi Journey 2023' curated by Patti King. My piece, 'Sheer and Layer' is a part of this exhibit. If you are in the Pacific Northwest area, please come and visit the exhibit.

My next read is Vanishing Fleece, Adventures in American Wool by Clara Parkes.

Have a great summer!
